Decorative prints where surface gloss matters more than strength
PLA with gloss-forming additives; the finish costs elongation at break, which falls to 2.8 %, and layer adhesion, which in independent tests drops to a quarter of plain PLA.
Silk PLA is chosen for the way a surface catches light. Gloss-forming additives create reflective highlights on sculptures, ornaments and decorative models, often avoiding a separate glossy coating. The existing planetary-gear print illustrates a visually effective use in a gently handled teaching model; it should not be mistaken for evidence that silk PLA is a good engineering gear material.
Tested silk-PLA grades have limited elongation and weak layer performance. Thin stems, screw bosses and loaded gear teeth can therefore be poor matches despite an attractive finish. Sanding also removes the very gloss the material was selected for. Its value is usually a finished appearance straight from printing, rather than improved load-bearing capability.
An educational planetary gearbox. The uploader identifies the photographed gears as silk PLA, with brass inserts and metal bolts.

Values describe representative grades, not every spool. Manufacturer datasheets and independent tests retain their source labels and dates. Printed orientation, test method, conditioning and formulation can change results. Unknown values are —. A listed use is not a certification.
