Read the full material overview

The strongest common amorphous engineering filament: 62–69 MPa printed, HDT above 110 °C and optical clarity, but it warps severely, wants a 70–100 °C chamber and yellows outdoors.

Applications

Polycarbonate matters when a part must combine rigidity, impact toughness and resistance to heat. That combination explains its use in instrument housings and protective covers, while optical grades add an unusual capability: transparent parts that still tolerate mechanical handling. Covestro supplies dedicated lens-quality Makrolon grades for corrective lenses, sunglasses and sports eyewear, combining low weight with optical quality and mechanical robustness.

Its practical weaknesses are demanding drying and chamber conditions, warping, solvent-induced stress cracking and UV degradation without suitable stabilization. FDM layer bonding can also limit a loaded bracket or housing before the polymer itself fails. Printed optical parts scatter light at layer interfaces, so transparent filament does not automatically produce a useful lens; loaded service temperature must be chosen from grade-specific thermal data.

How to read these values

Values describe representative grades, not every spool. Manufacturer datasheets and independent tests retain their source labels and dates. Printed orientation, test method, conditioning and formulation can change results. Unknown values are —. A listed use is not a certification. Shore A, Shore D and Rockwell hardness are separate scales.
