A practical step up from PLA for tougher functional parts. Expect a little more tuning.

Functional parts, enclosures and outdoor fittings that need more toughness and heat tolerance than PLA
The default step up from PLA: tougher, tolerant to about 70 °C, and printable on an open frame, at the cost of stringing and a tendency to weld itself to bare PEI.
PETG is a useful general-purpose engineering filament for housings, holders, clamps and machine accessories that need some toughness without demanding an enclosed printer. Its relatively low printing shrinkage helps mating parts retain their shape, and its ductility allows modest deformation before fracture. Prusa uses PETG for plastic components on the Original Prusa i3 MK3, providing a real production example rather than just a suggested use.
The same compliance that helps during handling makes PETG a weaker choice for permanently loaded precision fixtures: it creeps, especially as temperature rises. It also strings and bonds aggressively to some build surfaces. Use the actual grade’s heat-deflection data rather than treating all PETG parts as suitable for a hot enclosure.
FDM · Unfilled PETG; Original Prusa i3 MK3 · Documented case
Prusa states that the machine’s plastic parts are made from PETG, using its toughness and low-warp printing for functional printer hardware. This identifies the polymer; it does not establish recycled PETG or carbon-filled PETG use.
FDM · Prusament PETG · Manufacturer-listed applications
Prusa specifically lists holders and clamps as PETG applications. Moderate ductility and low printing warp suit fitted mechanical accessories, while sustained clamping still needs allowance for creep.
A two-layer PETG sheet folds into a three-dimensional structure. The uploader describes this as their MK4 print.
Listing note: “Print .2mm layers with a .4mm nozzle in PETG.”

Values describe representative grades, not every spool. Manufacturer datasheets and independent tests retain their source labels and dates. Printed orientation, test method, conditioning and formulation can change results. Unknown values are —. A listed use is not a certification. Shore A, Shore D and Rockwell hardness are separate scales.
