Enclosures, automotive interior parts and tooling that must hold shape above PLA's 55 °C ceiling
The original engineering filament: tough, acetone-smoothable and good to about 85 °C, but it warps badly without an enclosure and emits styrene while printing.
ABS is a practical engineering choice for housings, handled parts, tooling and interior trim when toughness, moderate heat resistance and finishability matter together. The rubber-modified matrix tolerates impact better than brittle display materials, while sanding, painting and solvent joining help turn multipart prints into finished prototypes or repair components.
Its main compromises are process control and outdoor aging. Large prints can warp or split as cooling stress develops, so enclosure temperature and layer bonding influence the finished component as much as nominal resin strength. UV exposure eventually embrittles ordinary ABS; ASA is usually the more appropriate starting point for prolonged sunlight. Standard ABS also lacks the flame-retardant qualification of a dedicated FR formulation.
FDM · Polymaker ABS; exact grade unspecified · Documented case
Polymaker illustrates its ABS material guide with a bicycle bottle holder explicitly captioned as made from its ABS. The source does not identify the exact grade or provide mechanical test results for the holder.
FDM · ABS polymer family; manufacturer-listed applications · Manufacturer-listed applications
Polymaker lists jigs, fixtures, sand-casting patterns and thermoforming-mold patterns among ABS printing applications. These exploit shape, toughness and finishability rather than providing a blanket rating for process temperature or production life.

Values describe representative grades, not every spool. Manufacturer datasheets and independent tests retain their source labels and dates. Printed orientation, test method, conditioning and formulation can change results. Unknown values are —. A listed use is not a certification.
