The classic gear and bearing plastic, and still all but absent from the filament market: no POM filament appears in 3DJAKE's 8228-product catalogue, igo3d's 17452, MatterHackers or Printed Solid, and Apium states its own machines are the only ones that print it. Property data below is from extruded POM-C stock, not from printed parts.

Applications

POM, or acetal, is widely used for gears, sliding guides, bushings and other moving mechanisms. Its stiffness, dimensional stability, resilience and inherent sliding behavior help components retain their shape while moving against another surface. Celanese markets Hostaform POM for gears; its tribologically modified SlideX compounds are listed for gear-shift mechanisms, furniture slides, roller shutters and stabilizer joints, where wear, friction and noise are central design concerns.

Grade selection matters: low-wear additives target sliding contacts, impact modifiers change toughness, and antistatic compounds change electrical behavior. POM filament and compatible printing systems are relatively scarce. A printed gear or bushing needs its own wear, fit and load assessment rather than dimensions derived from stock-shape properties alone. Acids and oxidants also restrict service even when oils or bases are compatible.

Celanese lists these moving-contact applications for the specially modified SlideX POM family because reducing friction and wear can improve operation and reduce noise.

How to read these values

Values describe representative grades, not every spool. Manufacturer datasheets and independent tests retain their source labels and dates. Printed orientation, test method, conditioning and formulation can change results. Unknown values are —. A listed use is not a certification. Shore A, Shore D and Rockwell hardness are separate scales.
